The caption read [translated] "Monsieur Pierre Curie, the philosopher who discovered radium, was crushed in the street and killed by a wagon. Monsieur Curie crossed la Rue Dauphine near Pont Neuf, at 2:30, standing behind a hackney coach. At that moment a carriage arrived drawn by two horses carrying military uniforms, with the driver Louis Manin." Rain was heavy and Curie's sight was probably obscured by his umbrella. The hackney coach in this rendition is passing out of sight to the left. In the background is the bridge (Pont Neuf).
